For those who wish to major in art and pursue a career in a museum, gallery or art organization and/or continue their studies at the graduate level, there are more than one path to choose from. Students choose between art history and visual arts majors. The latter group takes a variety of visual arts courses, including ceramics, painting, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, and book art. Faculty and staff cultivate critical and creative thinking to achieve clear communication and problem-solving. Students can pursue a career as a visual artist or consider a variety of careers, including art therapy, art management, exhibition design, or art criticism.

The topic taught by Dr. Nancy Kelker in the fall semester of 2018: Students in the Art of Painted Manuscripts explored Mesoamerican manuscripts and carved hieroglyphs created by the Maya, Mystic and Mexicans, and combined them with Islamic traditions A comparison was made between manuscripts drawn in West Asia and India. These hieroglyphs and hieroglyphs often narrate the history of the dynasty and record the birth, inheritance, marriage and death of the ruling families in ancient Mexico. The feature of this course is the experience part, where students use traditional materials to create their own family stories, such as bark paper, deerskin and natural pigments, methods, and idioms of ancient Mayans, Mystic or Islamic miniature painters.

Realizing that few students today know too much about the First World War (the 1914-1918 conflict that changed the world), this prompted faculty member Kyle Stoneman to create a titled "War in War Printmaker: The Art of Sir John Muirhead Born" exhibition. Student Jane Kim collaborates with Stoneman, and his research involves the social and artistic impact of the First World War. He said: "The theme of the show is the aesthetics of World War I propaganda and the role of artists and writers in creating this aesthetic." Stoneman originally purchased the characteristic prints for teaching purposes. He explained: " I hope that students have practical experience in curating museum-quality works by major artists.” He hopes that the audience can better understand the main roles artists played during the war and the ways in which they shaped the war legacy. Close cooperation with faculty and staff is an example of practical learning at MTSU.

Students studying visual arts can pursue a career as a visual artist or consider a variety of careers, including art therapy, art management, exhibition design, or art criticism. Examples of fields include but are not limited to the following:

Art graduates find career opportunities in various entities; some choose to continue their studies in graduate school. Examples of both are listed below:

Courses in the Department of Art and Design can be awarded with Bachelor of Science (BS), Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees.
